Good old stairs. My
fondest memories of running stairs were my freshman year at state wrestling in
Lincoln, Nebraska. At that time if you lost your first match, you had to wait
to see if the person who beat you won his next match. I had gotten beat by a
fellow freshman, who was to face a senior next. I was sure he was going to get
beat, and I would be done. A few hours later the freshman won; I remember
setting down my unfinished ice cream cup to go weigh myself. I was four pounds
over the legal weight limit. By morning, I was still two pounds over. That day
I touched every step in the arena. The Bob Devaney Sports Center has a lot of
steps. I did make weight! I realize now that the weight I lost was mainly
water, but what a workout!
Tag Team Stairs
This is a good one to do
with that older child who may feel the need to rest frequently. Start at either
the top or the bottom of the steps, whichever has the most room. Whoever starts
first begins running up the stairs (one at a time preferably) and then walking
down the steps. You might want to make the repetitions five times up and down
the steps. On your fifth repetition, tag your child and then encourage as he or
she runs the steps. Keep going back and forth until you both complete the
desired repetitions. Increase the repetitions as you both get into better
shape.
